Direct and Indirect Speech – براہ راست اور بالواسطہ تقریر
English: Direct speech is when we quote the exact words spoken by someone. Indirect speech (also called reported speech) is when we report what someone said without quoting their exact words. Changing pronouns, tenses, and sometimes adverbs of time and place is necessary in indirect speech.
1️⃣ Rules for Direct Speech
English:
- Enclose the exact words in quotation marks.
- Capitalize the first word inside quotation marks.
- Punctuation marks like commas, question marks, and exclamation marks are placed correctly inside quotes.
Example: She said, "I am reading a book."
اردو:
- اصل الفاظ کو اقتباس کے نشان (" ") میں لکھیں۔
- اقتباس کے پہلے لفظ کو بڑا لکھیں۔
- سوالیہ، حیرت انگیز، یا وقفہ کے نشانات درست جگہ پر رکھیں۔
مثال: اس نے کہا، "میں کتاب پڑھ رہی ہوں۔"
2️⃣ Rules for Indirect Speech
English:
- Remove quotation marks.
- Change pronouns according to the subject.
- Shift tenses back (present → past, past → past perfect, etc.).
- Adjust adverbs of time/place if necessary (today → that day, here → there).
Example: She said that she was reading a book.
اردو:
- اقتباس کے نشانات ہٹا دیں۔
- ضمیر کو موضوع کے مطابق بدلیں۔
- زمانہ (tense) کو پیچھے کریں (حال → ماضی، ماضی → ماضی کامل، وغیرہ)۔
- وقت اور جگہ کے الفاظ میں تبدیلی کریں (آج → اُس دن، یہاں → وہاں)۔
مثال: اس نے کہا کہ وہ کتاب پڑھ رہی تھی۔
